The title field has disappeared from contacts

After moving to version 24, the title (Mr, Mrs, Dr…) no longer shows on contact cards. It is intended, and one constant brings it back.

What was checked
Tested on 4 October 2026: contact with the title "Mister" created in 23.0.4, real migration to 24.0.1; field absent on creation, editing and card; constant added through the Other Setup screen, field and value "Mister" back. MAIN_USE_TITLE_FOR_MEMBER tested on members. Contact card (contact/card.php) compared in the official code in 20.0.4, 23.0.4, 24.0.0, 24.0.1, 24.0.2 and in the development branch. Change announced in the official 24.0 changelog.

Since the upgrade to version 24, the “Title” field (Mr, Mrs, Dr…) no longer appears when you create or edit a contact. It has also disappeared from the contact card.

Nothing is broken, and your data is not lost. It is an intended change in version 24: the field is now hidden by default.

Bringing it back

  1. Go to HomeSetupOther Setup.
  2. Add the constant MAIN_USE_TITLE_FOR_CONTACT with the value 1.
  3. Open a contact again: the title field is back, on creation, on editing and on the card.

The titles entered before the upgrade reappear as they were: they stayed in the database, only the display was turned off.

Not to be confused with members

MAIN_USE_TITLE_FOR_MEMBER also exists in 24, but it concerns members (Members module): it brings the title back when creating and editing a member. For contacts, it is indeed MAIN_USE_TITLE_FOR_CONTACT. If you use both modules, you need both.

Why this change

The official 24 changelog puts it in its “WARNING” section, the one for changes that may cause regressions, with this instruction: to use the title of contacts, MAIN_USE_TITLE_FOR_CONTACT must be set to 1. It gives no reason. The upgrade does not create this constant: the field therefore disappears after the migration.

How this was verified

  • On a 23.0.4 test instance, a contact with the title “Mister”; the field is displayed.
  • Real migration of this instance to 24.0.1: the title is still in the database, no constant created, the field has disappeared from creation, editing and the card.
  • Constant added in HomeSetupOther Setup: the field comes back everywhere, with “Mister”.
  • In the official code: no condition up to 23.0.4; the three displays depend on MAIN_USE_TITLE_FOR_CONTACT from 24.0.0 to 24.0.2 and in the development branch.

If other fields have disappeared

If the upgrade made other fields or settings disappear and you cannot find which ones, the €90 diagnosis is about reviewing your instance with you for one hour, then giving you in writing what changed and what putting it right would cost.
